Invidious is the better choice when your goal is removing Google's data collection from your video consumption, not just the ads. Because it acts as a server-side proxy, your requests do not reach Google's tracking infrastructure directly. YouTube Premium still runs on Google's servers, so watch history, device identifiers, and behavioral signals are retained even under the paid subscription tier.
YouTube Premium is still the better choice when you need offline downloads, when you rely on the YouTube Music subscription bundled into the plan, or when you want live streams and all YouTube features to work exactly as the official app presents them. YouTube Premium also requires no server setup: it works immediately on any device through the official app.
The practical tradeoff is infrastructure versus convenience. Invidious is free but requires either managing a Crystal and Postgres server or trusting a public instance operator. YouTube Premium charges monthly but delivers a managed, no-setup experience. For privacy-first users comfortable with a server or a public instance, Invidious provides more meaningful separation from Google's data systems than any paid YouTube plan can.
