TL;DR

Deviload is a desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux that wraps yt-dlp in a GUI for video and music downloads. It replaces paid tools like 4K Video Downloader Plus and SnapDownloader with a free, MIT-licensed app that includes a persistent download queue, a media library, a YouTube Music browser (Devil Music), a video editor (Devil Cut), and direct integration with Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex. Built with Rust and Tauri 2, it ships with yt-dlp, FFmpeg, and Deno bundled.

who it's for

Who Deviload is for#

Archiving YouTube channels and playlists locally

Researchers, content archivists, and creators who regularly download entire YouTube channels or playlists for long-term local storage. Deviload's watched-channel feature adds new videos automatically in the chosen format every 6 hours while the app runs, and the library organizes them by channel with search, tags, and collections.

Skip if:

User needs headless server-side downloading without a running desktop GUI; Deviload requires an active desktop session to run.

Populating a Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex media server

Home media server owners who want YouTube channels or artist discographies in Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex. Deviload downloads into the expected dated-episode folder structure for video and artist/album folders for music, and triggers a library scan via the server API after each batch. No manual file reorganization is needed.

Skip if:

User needs automated, unattended downloads on a headless server; Deviload is a desktop app and requires a user session.

Building an offline music library from YouTube Music

Users who want a local music library built from YouTube Music content without a YouTube Music subscription or Google account. Devil Music browses the catalog and provides recommendations based on local listening history. The MP3 download button on any song card adds it to the download queue without interrupting playback.

Trimming and exporting downloaded video clips

Creators who download videos and need basic editing before posting. Devil Cut handles trimming, clip arrangement, per-clip speed (0.5x to 3x), transitions, and export to MP4 at up to 4K, GIF, or MP3, all inside the same app that did the download.

Skip if:

User needs professional editing with color grading, multi-camera sync, or advanced audio processing; Devil Cut is a basic timeline editor.

the problem

The problem it solves#

yt-dlp is the most capable open source video downloading tool available, but running it means writing commands, managing output path templates, and knowing which flags to pass for playlists, subtitles, or quality selection. Most people who want to download from YouTube face a choice: pay for a GUI app that wraps the same functionality, or spend time learning command-line tools.

Paid desktop apps in this category charge subscription or one-time fees for features yt-dlp already handles for free, and they stop at the download step. Organizing files into a browseable library, playing YouTube Music without a subscription, editing clips before sharing, or automating downloads for a watched channel all require separate tools. Users building a local media collection end up managing a downloader, a file manager, a music player, and a video editor with no shared state between them.

how Deviload solves it

How it solves it#

Download queue with yt-dlp and format profiles

Paste one or more links or drop them anywhere on the window. Pick a format (MP4, MKV, WebM, MP3, FLAC, or WAV) or use a saved profile for presets like music, phone, or maximum quality. Run 1 to 8 downloads in parallel; the queue persists across restarts and resumes interrupted tasks on request.

Devil Music built-in YouTube Music browser

Browse the YouTube Music catalog, build a playback queue, and get taste-based recommendations without a YouTube Music account or subscription. Download songs as MP3 with a single button on any song card, adding the task to the download queue without interrupting playback. Local likes and listening history shape recommendations; no remote account is required.

Devil Cut timeline video editor

A timeline editor in its own window with split, trim, transitions (crossfade, slide, wipe, through black, circle), per-clip speed from 0.5x to 3x, volume, and captions. Export to MP4 at up to 4K in H.264 or H.265, GIF, or MP3. Projects save automatically; source files are never modified.

Media library with Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex integration

Finished downloads land in a searchable library with favorites, collections, tags, and a duplicate finder. Choosing a Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex subfolder arranges files in the expected dated-episode or artist/album folder structure. Add a server address and API key and Deviload triggers a library scan once a batch of downloads finishes.

Live stream recording with daily scheduling

Recording starts from the moment you add a live stream link and shows elapsed time and file size as it runs. Stop recording and the file saves as a normal MP4. Set a start time, a duration, and a daily repeat option to capture the same stream automatically each day. A recording cut off when Deviload closes is saved at the next start.

strengths · trade-offs

Strengths and trade-offs#

Strengths

  • Free and MIT-licensed, no subscription requiredDeviload is free and MIT-licensed. Paid alternatives in this category (4K Video Downloader Plus, SnapDownloader, iTubeGo, YTD Video Downloader) charge subscription or one-time fees for comparable download functionality. MIT licensing means you can inspect the source, fork it, and modify it without restriction.
  • Media library, music player, and video editor in one appMost paid and free GUI downloaders handle the download step and nothing else. Deviload adds a searchable media library with favorites and collections, a YouTube Music browser with playback and recommendations, and a timeline video editor. All three share the same library; files downloaded are immediately available in the player and editor without importing.
  • Bundled toolchain with no manual PATH setupThe installer ships with yt-dlp, FFmpeg, and Deno on all three platforms. No separate installs or PATH configuration is needed. Deviload also updates yt-dlp nightly when idle and updates the app itself in one click on Windows, macOS, and the Linux AppImage.
  • Direct media-server folder layout and API scan triggerChoosing a Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex subfolder lays out video downloads as dated episodes of their source channel, with .nfo files, thumbnails, and a tvshow.nfo. Music goes into artist and album folders. With an API key configured, Deviload asks the server to scan after downloads finish. Free and paid GUI downloaders in this category skip this step.

Trade-offs

  • -macOS build is unsigned and not notarizedThe macOS release is not signed with an Apple Developer ID and is not notarized. Running it for the first time requires opening Terminal and running xattr -cr /Applications/Deviload.app to remove the Gatekeeper quarantine flag. This is a documented extra step with no workaround until the project acquires a developer certificate.
  • -Windows-first; macOS and Linux are secondary targetsThe README describes Windows as the primary development target. macOS and Linux builds come from the CI pipeline and have been tested, but feature depth and support responsiveness are secondary on those platforms. The macOS build is explicitly labeled a test build in the release.
  • -New project with a small contributor baseDeviload was first released in September 2026 and has 164 stars and a single-person team (Pronexsteam). Edge-case bugs may take longer to fix than in tools with larger contributor communities. The 0 open issues count reflects early-stage adoption rather than a complete absence of bugs.
versus alternatives

Deviload vs alternatives#

Deviload vs 4K Video Downloader Plus

4K Video Downloader Plus is a paid Windows and macOS downloader covering video, audio, playlists, and subtitles. It focuses on the download step with no media library, music browser, or editor included. Deviload covers the same download scenarios through yt-dlp at no cost and adds a media library, a YouTube Music browser, a video editor, and Jellyfin/Plex integration. Users who only need downloads will find either tool adequate; users who want to organize and play what they download will need separate tools alongside 4K Video Downloader Plus.

Deviload vs SnapDownloader

SnapDownloader is a paid GUI downloader with broad site support. Deviload inherits yt-dlp's site catalog and adds a persistent media library, a YouTube Music browser (Devil Music), and a video editor (Devil Cut), features SnapDownloader does not include. Deviload is free and MIT-licensed; SnapDownloader is a paid product. On macOS, Deviload's unsigned test build requires a manual Gatekeeper override on first launch; SnapDownloader ships as a paid commercial Mac app.

Deviload vs iTubeGo

iTubeGo is a paid downloader focused on fast speeds and broad site coverage. It handles playlists, format selection, and subtitles but offers no library management, music player, or video editor. Deviload covers the same core download features at no cost and extends further into media library organization and built-in editing. iTubeGo ships as a standard paid commercial app; Deviload's macOS build is unsigned and needs a manual security step on first run.

Deviload vs YTD Video Downloader

YTD Video Downloader is a paid Windows downloader focused on YouTube and popular video sites. Like other paid tools in this category, it covers downloads without a media library, music player, or editor. Deviload is the free, MIT-licensed option with a more complete local-media workflow for users who want to go beyond downloading.

FAQ#

Is Deviload free to use?

Yes. Deviload is free and MIT-licensed with no paid tier, subscription, or feature gating. The developer accepts optional support via Ko-fi, but all features are available at no cost.

Which platforms does Deviload run on?

Windows is the primary supported platform, with a full installer and a portable ZIP on the GitHub releases page. macOS and Linux packages are published automatically by the CI pipeline. The macOS build is an unsigned test release that requires a Gatekeeper override on first run; Linux gets a .deb package and an AppImage.

Does Deviload work with YouTube Music?

Yes. Devil Music lets you browse the YouTube Music catalog, queue songs, get recommendations based on local listening history, and download songs as MP3 without a YouTube Music account or subscription. Availability depends on YouTube and your network connection.

Can Deviload download from sites other than YouTube?

Yes. Deviload uses yt-dlp as its download engine, which supports hundreds of sites beyond YouTube, including YouTube Music, Instagram, TikTok, and X. The interface is the same regardless of the source site.

Does Deviload integrate with Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex?

Yes. Choosing a Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex subfolder arranges downloads in the expected folder convention: dated episodes for channels and artist/album folders for music. Add a server address and API key and Deviload triggers a library scan once downloads finish.
