Lightpanda vs Browserbase
Browserbase is a managed cloud service that provides hosted Chromium for AI agent workloads. Lightpanda offers the same CDP and Puppeteer compatibility but runs on your own infrastructure instead of Browserbase's cloud.
| Feature | Lightpanda | Browserbase |
|---|
| License | AGPL-3.0 | Proprietary |
| Self-hosting | Yes | No |
| Protocol | CDP, WebDriver Bidi | CDP |
| Memory (100 pages) | 123MB peak | Chrome-based (~2GB) |
| Pricing | Free self-hosted | Per-session cloud billing |
Lightpanda is the better choice when you need to eliminate per-session API costs, keep browser traffic on your own network for privacy or compliance, or run large parallel workloads where cloud billing compounds fast. Browserbase is the better choice when you need managed reliability with no infrastructure to operate, or when target sites are complex enough that Chrome's broader web platform coverage matters for avoiding rendering failures.
Lightpanda vs Browserless
Browserless provides managed headless Chrome as a service with a CDP endpoint you connect to just like any other browser. Lightpanda's CDP endpoint is architecturally identical, but the underlying browser engine is purpose-built rather than Chrome.
| Feature | Lightpanda | Browserless |
|---|
| License | AGPL-3.0 | Proprietary |
| Self-hosting | Yes | Cloud-managed |
| Browser engine | Zig (from scratch) | Chromium |
| Memory efficiency | 16x better than Chrome | Chrome baseline |
| Pricing | Free self-hosted | Subscription |
Teams moving from Browserless to Lightpanda change one line of code: the browserWSEndpoint URL in their Puppeteer or Playwright config. Browserless retains an advantage on sites that rely on browser APIs Lightpanda has not yet implemented, since it runs real Chromium.
Lightpanda vs Hyperbrowser
Hyperbrowser is a managed browser infrastructure service aimed at AI agent use cases. Like Browserbase and Browserless, it is a paid cloud service running Chromium-based infrastructure. Lightpanda covers the same use case with self-hosting and lower memory requirements.
Choose Lightpanda when your workload is high-volume enough that per-session billing makes managed services expensive, or when data cannot leave your infrastructure. Choose Hyperbrowser or a similar managed service when you need zero operations overhead and can accept the ongoing cost.
